12 Days of Christmas

12 Days of Christmas

In the popular “The 12 Days of Christmas” song we sing, “On the 5th day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 5 golden rings…” The words to this 18th century Carol have been on the lips of billions over the years and perhaps annoyed a few along the way. But, given the times we are living in, I saw these 5 gold rings differently when I experienced this year’s Magic of Lights display at Jones Beach. The 5 rings, though separate reminded me of the Olympic rings, ‘intersecting” representing the 5 continents: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.

The impact of Coronavirus has been felt throughout the world and the aviation industry being its main connector of these continents experienced tremendous losses – jobs, business and redevelopment opportunities, revenue and workers – the arms and legs, voices and faces of airports. However, there is good news, with numerous vaccines available and us learning how to protect ourselves and each other and with the blessings of almighty God our creator, redeemer and sustainer, we look towards the future with renewed zeal and hope.

I pray that you will realize how our lives intersect as the JFK Airport Community and that these 5 golden rings represent each of us striving for a better world in which to breathe freely, live and thrive.

With Christmas hope and blessings!
The Rev. Romeo K. Dabee
JFK Airport Community Minister/Chaplain
